CAGED BIRD

is the rebellion of a young female dancer who found the strength to defy the negative things her deceased mother said to her as a result of her desire to pursue dancing as a profession. The dancer’s mother was both a highly conservative evangelical Christian and super traditional African woman who rejected her daughters ambition to dance because she associated dancing with nudity and profanity, and shamed her daughter for wanting to use her body, often comparing it to prostitution. The rift between mother and daughter was never healed before her death and the dancer is now re ecting on her decision to follow her intuition and pursue her dream on the day of her mother’s memorial.
